Winter Event 1: Road Distance Relays
Published Mon 09 May 2022
The winter season premiership opener at Bonython Park had 39 teams and was held in good conditions for running. Flinders (12) and Adelaide Harriers (9) fielded the most ASA registered teams.
While waiting for re-affiliation Adelaide University fielded 7 community teams.
A big thanks to the ASA officials and volunteers who make each event possible.
Flinders started the season where they left off last year with comfortable wins in both the men’s and women’s open races. Flinders also won the Women’s U16, O35 and Men’s U18 with Adelaide Harriers winning the O35 and O50 Men’s races and Port Adelaide winning the U16 Men’s and U18 Women’s. Pembroke won the Women’s U20. Club teams are awarded a minimum of 2 points for each teams they fielded, with mixed teams given 1 point in each gender category.
In the Men’s race it was Jacob Cocks (FLN) who took control of the first leg giving Flinders a 25 second lead over Cael Mulholland (AUC) and Harrison Bagley (AH). Once Riley Cocks (FLN) took over the result was never in doubt as he extended the lead over Rhys Jones (AH) who had got the Harriers back into second. Bailey Dyer (FLN) was able to keep control of the comfortable lead despite Adrian Potter (AH) run the fastest time on the third leg, to give Flinders a win by nearly a minute. Paul Mulholland (AUC) got the university community team onto the podium.
In the women’s event it was a consistent team performance that gave Flinders a first up win in the women’s premiership. The opening leg was a close tussle with Annobel Kitto (AUC) just keeping in front of Zoe Toland (FLN) at the first changeover, with Anna Plew (AH) further back. Sophie Hlipala (FLN) took over the lead, but was caught at the changeover by Aleesha Robertson (AH) who ran the fastest leg of the day. However, it was Madeline Kelly (FLN) who dominated the final leg to give Flinders a comfortable win.

Course: The ‘short’ 2k (1.8k) loop provides some variation and a couple of tight turns, but all in all a nice place to hold the road relays. Now it’s been used a couple of times so athletes can now appreciated what constituted a fast lap.
