Track and Field Launch

Saturday's Track and Field Launch kicked off the 2021-22 Athletics SA (ASA) season. 

More than 270 athletes registered for the first event of the season, participating across the 60m, 200m, 800m, 200m & 400m hurdles, 3000m, high jump, 1500m walk, triple jump, shot put, javelin and 60m & 200m frame running disciplines.

Saints triple jumper Ken Ferrante Tanikawa goes flying through the air to appropriately LAUNCH the 2021-22 season. 

The Track and Field Launch was the first of three community athletics meets of the 2021-22 season, which allowed people the opportunity to come and try athletics for the first time or enjoy a first transition into an ASA event, as well as providing ASA members a chance to compete ahead of the Copyworld Toshiba Interclub season. 

Round 1 of the Copyworld Toshiba Interclub season will take place this Saturday, October 16 at the SA Athletics Stadium.

The next community athletics meet will be held at the new Bridgestone Athletics Centre in Salisbury on November 6, 2021, while the final one of the year will take place on December 17.

 

Pre Season Form

There were plenty of highlights from the opening day of competition, the first one being that everyone looked very excited to be back and competing at the SA Athletics Stadium - Welcome Back! 

From a competition point of view, Tryphena Hewett's (Tea Tree Gully AC) form in the Women's High Jump was impressive, clearing 1.75m to win the competotion, followed up by Northern Districts athlete Chelsea Friedrich (1.70m).

Brad Hann from Port Adelaide cleared 1.85m in the men's high jump competition, finishing first ahead of Onesimus Hewett of Tea Tree Gully (1.80m).

Northern Districts' Lillee Wakefield equalled her F20 State record shot put with an 8.47m attempt in the 4kg open competition.

The 60m sprint was a popular event on Saturday, with seven male and six female heats. 

Jack Doney from Saints Athletics Club was the fastest male over the line, running 7.11 in heat 1, while Jordi McMillan ran 7.69 to take out her heat.

2021 U16 Female 4km Cross Country State Champion Grace Deacon (Flinders) ran the Women's 800m on Saturday and crossed the line first, in a time of 2:16.68, edging out Malaika McLeod (Saints) who ran 2:17.56.

SA Masters athlete, Kim Mottrom looked extremely strong in the first event of the day, the Men's 3000m Walk, quickly breaking away from his competition and completing the race in 12:30.01, before backing up to race the 3000m, running 10:55.80.

Kim Mottrom participated in both the Men's 3000m Walk and 3000m run on Saturday. He won the Race Walk in a time of 12:30.01.

Jordi McMillan, green top, ran the fastest Women's 60m sprint of the afternoon, 7.69.
