SA's Young Guns shine, both at home and away

SA's up and coming athletes had a good weekend at Athletics SA's Copyworld Toshiba Interclub 10, and also in Sydney at the 2022 NSW Junior Championships.

Athletics SA Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) thrower Marley Raikiwasa of Tea Tree Gully won the Women's U18 Shot Put and Discus competitions at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre with attempts of 14.66m and 48.33m respectively.

Also in NSW, Northern Districts' Taylor Larsson won the Women's U17 Shot Put and Discus competitions with 14.87m and 40.90m, while Saints EAP thrower Darcy Miller won the Men's U20 Discus with 54.41m, and finished second in the Men's U20 Shot Put (16.03m).

Western's William Evans also headed to Sydney and finished sixth in the Men's U20 Shot Put (12.58m).

At the local Copyworld Toshiba Interclub competition, it was 13-year-old Saints runner Jack Williams who was again turning heads as he ran a second Men's U14 State Record this month.

After running a Record 4:12.06 1500m at Interclub 9 on February 11, Williams ran 1:59.97 in Heat 1 of the Men's 800m to break Koby Parkinson's 2018 Record of 2:00.15, making him the first SA U14 athlete to break the two-minute barrier.

Saints' Dylan Stenson - who earlier this month claimed the Open Men's 800m State Title - won the 800m on Saturday in 1:49.22, ahead of Pembrokes' Asher Gillings (1:53.00) and Hills Districts' Dylan Krenczeck (1:54.84). Williams finished eighth overall.

Saints' Tomas Semmler won the Men's 60m sprint in 6.97, ahead of Ryan Atkins (7.05) and Andrew Maenda (7.22), while Port Adelaide's Atkins won the 200m in 21.73, ahead of Saints' Jayden Chambers (21.78) and Western's Blake Jones (22.18).

Flinders Athletic Club had the first four across the line in the Men's 3000m, as 16-year-old Torben Roberts won in 9:15.91, ahead of Hudson Miles (9:21.97), Sean Green (9:30.50) and Adrian Riessen (9.55.98).

In the Women's Track events, Pembroke teenager Lakara Stallan ran 7.68 to win the 60m sprint, ahead of Holly Beecham (7.84) and Triple Jumper Emilaya Ellis (7.98), while Western's teenager Leila Croker won the 200m in a National Qualifier 25.42.

Fifteen-year-old Croker edged out Caitlin Stallan (25.79) and 13-year-old Georgie Fielder (26.24).

Fielder also ran a Women's U16 National Qualifier 29.82 in the 200m Hurdles, while Pembroke's Aimee Haquoil ran a Women's U18 National Qualifier 70.15 in the 400m Hurdles.

Four runners managed National Qualifying times in the Women's 800m, with Saints 14-year-old Malaika McLeod crossing the line first in 2:13.63, ahead of 14-year-old Flinders runner Asha Lawson (2:15.12), Tea Tree Gully 12-year-old India Goodall (2:19.82) and 13-year-old Hannah Tourneur (2:19.96).

Northern Jet Jade Walas jumped an U20 National Qualifier 1.66m to win the Women's High Jump, while Hills Districts' Lily Smart managed an U16 National Qualifier 11.25m in the Triple Jump.

SA Masters athlete Ann Jefferies won both the O35 Shot Put (9.27m) and Javelin (28.30m) competitions, while Adelaide Harriers' Keira Post ran first in the Women's 60m Para (9.31) and second in the Women's 200m Para (31.41).

Flinders' Madelene McNeil won both the Women's 200m and 800m Para races in 31.16 and 3:20.52 respectively, while Northern Districts' Lillee Wakefield won the Women's Para Shot Put (Season's Best 8.80m) and Javelin (17.35m).

Western's Thomas Mattinson won the Men's 60m and 200m Race Running in 16.73 and 54.56 respectively, as well as the Men's Para Discus (2.84m), while Nathan Woods won the Men's Para 60m (7.93) and 200m (25.14). 

Other National Qualifiers achieved over the weekend came from Saints Multi-Eventer Ken Ferrante-Tanikawa in both the Men's U14 Shot Put (12.03m) and Javelin (42.20m), as well as Nicholas Pavia in the Men's U16 200m (27.85).

Get your Registrations in for the 2022 Australian Track and Field Championships by Monday, March 7 (5pm). 

The Championships will be held in Sydney from March 26 to April 3.

 

This Saturday Athletics SA will host Copyworld Toshiba Interclub 11 (Register HERE), while the final Interclub of the season will be held on March 12.
