National Record falls at Interclub 2

Athletics SA hosted its first Twilight meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday when more than 370 athletes participated in Round 2 of the Copyworld Interclub season.

Following the Interclub B format for the first time this season, athletes had the chance to compete in the 60m, 200m, 800m, 3000m, 200m and 400m Hurdles, 60m and 200m Frame Running, 1500m and 5000m Walk, High Jump, Javelin, Shot Put and Triple Jump events.

Western Athletics Club's T21 athlete broke a National Shot Put record on Saturday. 

In the Shot Put circle Western Athletics Club member Hugo Taheny put in a T21 Men National Record 10.40m effort.

Taheny also holds T21 National Records for the Javelin and Discus disciplines. 

Marley Raikiwasa and Taylor Larsson also showed good early season form in the U18 Women Shot Put, registering 14.48m and 13.36m respectively, comfortably furthering the Australian Championship Entry Standards of 12.65m with the 3kg Shot. 

Fox Obst took out the Open Men Shot Put event with an attempt of 14.23m, ahead of Joshua Love (10.17m) and Lane Whittaker (10.15m), while Christine Gayen secured the Open Women's Shot Put with 10.84m and Lillee Wakefield the Para Women Shot Put with 8.09m.

Just metres away, it was an enthralling battle at the high jump mat, with Northern District's Chelsea Friedrich and Tea Tree Gully's Tryphena Hewett once again going head to head in the Under 17 Women event.

Friedrich, who turns 16 this week, jumped a PB 1.76m and attemped Cheryl Hurst and Debbie Boyce's 1.81m State Record which has stood since 1980. 

Athletics SA Emerging Athlete Program member (ASA EAP) Hewett finished with a clearance of 1.66m.

Northern District’s Joshua Nenasheff

Northern District’s Joshua Nenasheff jumped a 6cm PB, clearing 1.96cm, to win the U17 High Jump ahead of Aiden Sutton, Liam Jones and Onesimus Hewett.

Jadyn Elsworthy, Brad Hann and Lane Whittaker were locked in a High jump battle of their own, all vying to secure the Open Men competition, but Elsworthy and Hann each finished with a height of 1.91m and Whittaker 1.81m.

EAP thrower Salumi Robberts took out the Open Women Javelin competition with 47.75m, ahead of fellow Western athlete Elly Read, 41.33m and Northern's Emma Cotgrove, 40.39m.   

Love took out the Open Men Javelin with an attempt of 47.91m, ahead of Whittaker, 43.59m, and Luke Meadows, 36.01m.

On the track, Michael Brusnahan recorded the fastest 200m race, of the 11 Heats, with a time of 21.63, edging out Blake Jones, 22.50, and Ifeanyichukwu Okiwelu, 22.69, in Heat 1.

Tea Tree Gully's Marley Raikiwasa

Tayla Philis ran 25.15 in Heat 1 of the Women 200m, crossing the line ahead of Emilaya Ellis, 25.92, and Amelie Burge, 26.09.

Western athlete, Philis made it the 200m/60m double, winning Heat 1 of the Women's 60m race in 7.87, ahead of Port Adelaide's Burge, 7.93, Sophie Cheshire and Ellis, each 7.97.

The next Copyworld Toshiba Interclub will be held on November 13, with Athletics SA hosting a Community Athletics Day at Salisbury's new Bridgestone Athletics Centre this Saturday afternoon - The Northern Games
