Final tune up before Nationals

Athletics SA hosted a Pre-Departure Meet at the SA Athletics Stadium on Saturday afternoon, providing those travelling to the 2022 Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney one final competition before the event kicks off next Saturday. 

Nationals will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre from March 26 to April 3.

Nine SA athletes travelled to Victoria to run in the 2022 Chemist Warehouse Melbourne Track Classic on Saturday evening. 

Across the middle distances, Hills Districts' Max Stevens ran less than nine seconds off the World Athletics Championships qualifying time of 8:22.00 in the Open Men's 3000m Steeplechase.

Stevens managed 8:30.90 to finish second behind Japan's Kosei Yamaguchi (8:27.74), while SA's Olympic Steeplechaser Matthew Clarke ran third in 8:43.96.

Hills Districts' Isaac Heyne ran both the Open Men's 1500m and John Landy Memorial Mile on Saturday night, managing 3:46.52 and 4:03.87 respectively.

Fellow Hills runner Caitlin Adams ran 4:22.17 in the Open Women's 1500m. 

In the sprint events, Saints teenager Aidan Murphy ran second to Caleb Law in the Open Men's 200m with a time of 20.67, while 18-year-old Jordi McMillan ran a PB 11.81 in the Open Women's 100m (ninth overall).

SA's Dylan Stenson, Harry May and DeGras Amekata ran in the Open Men's 800m, finishing fifth (1:48.15), sixth (1:49.06) and eighth (1:50.96) respectively.
