Published Fri 06 Dec 2024
This year, the Australian All Schools Championships heads to Brisbane, with South Australia sending a team of 119 athletes.
Day One
Day One saw SA athletes bring home 11 total medals.
Hannah Tourneur started things off strongly with a Gold-medal run in the U17 Girls 1500m, which she won by 5 seconds in a time of 4:31.16. In the same race, Saffron Miller ran well (4:48.36) to come home in fifth.
In the U18 Girls 1500m, Emma Henkel did extraordinarily well in tough conditions to run a 4:29.10 and place second.
Beau Lawson continued our Gold start, wrapping up top spot in the U14 Boys Shot Put with an imperious throw of 16.70. Fellow South Aussie Henry Pembshaw, meanwhile, threw 11.08 and placed 11th.
James Mitchell took Silver in the U16 Boys Long Jump, with a measure of 6.63, Ogbonnaya Uduma jumped to ninth place in the same event with a 5.82.
In an agonosingly close finish, Ken Ferrante Tanikawa beat his own State Record in the U16 Boys 200m Hurdles with a time of 23.05 - 0.02 seconds off the Gold, and, coincidentally, a National Junior Record.
To start our Para tally, Thomas Mattinson (T71) won the Gold in the U17 Para Boys 100m, with Finlay Bailey (T20) one spot outside of the medals. Finaly's time of 12.43 also set the U17 T20 National Record for the 100m, an incredible result and worthy reward for the hard work he's been putting in.
There was another Silver for SA in the U15 Boy's Pole Vault, where Luke Mathers cleared 3.40 to take second place.
Later in the day, Angelina Legrand added to SA's Gold haul, with a time of 24:33.12 elevating her to first in the U17 Girls 5000m Racewalk.
Keira Post added to our Day One Para success with a Silver in the U20 Para Girls 100m. Alexis Bruce finished 4th in the same race.
And we also saw two medals in relays. Day Two
It was a day of records, as well as more medals, for Team SA on Day Two of the Australian All Schools Championships.
Finlay Bailey (T20) added a State Record to yesterday's National Record, finishing the PA U17 Boys 200m in 25.70 to beat his own record, as well as take home the Bronze medal. A huge achievement - and big signs that he can still go even further as an athlete. Keep it up Finlay!
Day Two also saw Ken Ferrante Tanikawa absolutely blaze to a 12.59 in the U16 Boys 100m Hurdles heats, setting a National Record. He ultimately fell away in the Final race later in the day, but that now marks 2 National Junior Records for Team SA so far. Huge effort from both Finlay and Ken on their National Records - doing us proud over in Queensland.
Speaking of records, Amelia Sheridan put in an incredible performance in the U14 Girls 1500m to win the Gold in a time of 4:24.69. That time not only gave Amelia the Gold, but also the State U14, U16 and U18 Records, too. Oh, and the Championship Record. One of the most remarkable performances from a junior athlete we've seen in some time.
Tilly Williams came home with Bronze in the same event with a time of 4:37.98, cementing SA's superiority in the middle-distance event.
Our other Day Two Gold came from Lawson Jones, whose vault of 4.35 in the U18 Boys Pole Vault saw him literally head and shoulders over the competition.
Our para athletes continued their success from Day One, as alongside Finlay's Bronze, Keira Post (T37) took the Silver in the PA U20 Girls 200m in 29.18, with Alexis Bruce (T38) running a 31.49 for 4th place.
Off the back of her admirable performance on Day One, Emma Henkel added a Bronze to her Silver, with a run of 2:10.15 in the U18 Girls 800m. Malaika McLeod also represented SA in that race, placing 7th with a time of 2:19.55.
Off the track, Lola Whiteman posted a jump of 11.09 in the U14 Girls Triple Jump to secure second place, with Anja Jansen Van Vuuren coming in 8th with a jump of 10.56.
Caitlin Holmes was our other Day Two medallist, a distance of 37.09 good for Bronze in the U14 Girls Discus Throw, SA's Malike Spalding also competing, and finishing 10th with a throw of 24.02.

Meanwhile, Finlay Bailey's (T/F20) jump of 4.81 in the PA U17 Boys Long Jump, which secured 5th place, was yet another State Record for the young para athlete.
