2020-21 Emerging Athlete Program - Squad Announcement
Published Mon 15 Jun 2020
The Emerging Athlete Program (EAP), a uniquely South Australian program, focuses on high performing athletes between 17 years old through to 23 years old who are currently bridging the gap between Athletics Australia’s Junior High-Performance Programs and current SASI / NASS scholarships.
Having a well-rounded program, centred around long-term athlete development and support, will allow the athlete and their coach to maximise their current practices. The legacy for coach development will enhance the technical knowledge of coaches in providing best practice support networks to further build the talent pool. The program requires athlete and coach engagement.
This program will look to offer both training and education which will support athletes to attain the necessary learning opportunities to fully understand the demands of their event and performance readiness at an international level.
The program will address the four key areas for High Performing Athletes:
- Physical
- Technical
- Tactical
- Mental
The EAP is supported by the South Australian Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing and Powerade. The program will be facilitated by Athletics SA and will engage a range of service providers to ensure that the athletes have access to the leading edge of sports knowledge, facilities and technology.
To be considered for the Athletics SA Emerging Athlete Program athletes must show evidence against the performance matrix and the detailed submission of a complete Athlete Nomination. A selection committee will rank all applicants against the criteria and assess the athlete nomination form.
Athletics SA is proud to announce the selected athletes for the 2020-21 program below:
Salumi is one of the State’s best up and coming throwers and had a very good season last year throwing a big PB and stepping up to some elite level national open competitions. Her PB of 50.90m ranks her extremely highly on a national level and puts her in a position to qualify for the World U20 Athletics Championships. She is following in the footsteps of a great history of female Javelin throwers who have picked up national records and many international medals over the past decade. |
From a strong hammer throwing family Jet is a powerful young athlete. Earlier this year Jett threw personal bests in Hammer Throw (50.57), 6kg Hammer Throw (63.29) and 5kg Hammer Throw (70.56). The 5kg personal best saw Jett win the 2020 NSW Junior Championships. Jett is the ASA State Champion in the 5kg U18 Hammer Throw, 6kg U20 Hammer Throw and the Open Men's Hammer Throw. |
Jack jumped the World U20 Championship qualifying height of 5.13m in February 2020 to be the only pole vaulter in Australia to qualify for the event. Coached by Kym Simons, Jack is working on further increasing his strength and physical ability to take his jumping to the next level. |
Olivia is a budding young race walker, who is one of two of our EAP athletes in this event group. She is a talented young athlete who knows the direction she wants to head. Technically sound, she will be looking to qualify for an Australian team in coming years. Her performances show she has what it takes to make an international team, and her ambition should see her achieve that. She’s hoping that this year she will be able to step up the training again and make further progression. |
Tristan is one of Australia’s future race walking stars, following in the footsteps of multiple Olympic and World Championship medalist Jarred Tallent. As he has developed over the years, the pair have sometimes even been training together. Tristan made the Australian team for the World Athletics Race Walking Teams Championships that was to have been held in Minsk, Belarus earlier this year however was postponed due to COVID-19 impacts. He is nearing the qualifying mark for the 10,000m race walk at World U20’s and will be aiming for that and a national title this season. |
Lucy won a gold medal in the U18 Triple Jump and a bronze medal in the U20 Triple Jump at the 2019 Australian Track & Field Championships. She backed this triple jump success up with first place in the U18 event at the Oceania Championships a few months later. With a personal best of 12.51m Lucy is hoping to break the 13m mark which will allow her to qualify for the World U20 Athletics Championships. |
Jack is the EAP program’s first Para athlete representative. A T/F35 class competitor, he has risen through the ranks breaking a number of National Records in the process. Still young in his athletic career, Jack has the potential to be our next Paralympic representative, and his current PB’s have him achieving a B qualifier for the Tokyo games. His current coach Lynn Larsen guided the gold medal performance of Brayden Davidson in Rio 2016, so he is in astute hands. |
Molly is one of the state's most promising young sprinters. The former Bay Sheffield winner (2017), had a standout season in 2019 with personal bests in both the 100m (12.16) and 200m (24.20). Molly has since changed coaches and has focused on her strength and conditioning program with the aim of a big 2020/21 season. |
Isaac rose to prominence by winning the U20 Mens 5000m at the 2019 Australian Track and Field Championships and followed this up in August 2019 winning the Australian U20 Cross Country title. Isaac continued with a fantastic end to the 2019/20 athletic season with PB’s in the 1500m (3:49.66), 3000m (8:11.12) and 5000m (14:17.63 in early 2020). Isaac has his sights set on going Sub 3:45 in the 1500m, Sub 8:00 in the 3000m and Sub 14:00 in the 5000m. |
