Thursday, 24 May 2018 | Athletics South Australia

Athletics South Australia is proud to announce the first group of athletes selected for the Emerging Athlete Program Training Squad. The program focuses on high performing athletes between 17 years old through to 23 years old who are currently bridging the gap between Athletics Australia’s Junior High-Performance Programs and current SASI / NASS scholarships.

We are excited to announce the ten athletes for the 2018-19 Emerging Athlete Program.

The group of athletes includes two athletes that have been selected to represent Australia at the World Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland from 10th -15th of July – Sarah Eckel & Harrison Hunt. Additionally, the squad also includes Caitlin Adams, who represented Australia at the recent World University Cross Country Championships in St Gallen, Switzerland.

Having a well-rounded program targeted at long term athlete development and support, will allow the athlete and their coach to maximise their current practices. The legacy for coach development will enhance the technical knowledge of coaches in providing best practice support networks to further build the talent pool. The program requires athlete and coach engagement.

This program will look to offer both training and education which will support athletes to attain the necessary learning opportunities to fully understand the demands of their event and performance readiness at an international level.

The program is a significant step towards a clear pathway for young athletes in South Australia wanting to follow in the foots steps of Jared Tallent, Jess Trengove, Brayden Davidson and Kurtis Marschall.

The Emerging Athlete Program is supported by the South Australian Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing. The program will be facilitated by Athletics South Australia and will engage recognised High Performance service providers to ensure that the athletes have access to the leading edge of Sports knowledge, facilities and technology.
