Flinders Athletics Clubs' Riley Cocks and Hills Districts, Jess Trengove have secured the open state 5000m titles for 2016/17 in front of an enthusiastic crowd at SA Athletics Stadium last night.
US Olympian Lopez Lomong just managed to hold off young South Australian rising star Riley Cocks. Lomong ran 14:15.53 to finish just ahead of Cocks who ran a huge last lap to finish in 14:15.96. Cocks will now target the Zatopek: 10 next week in Melbourne for his debut over 10000m on the track
Post-race interview with Riley Cocks
Dual Olympian Jess Trengove ran away from Casey Wood (daughter of Comm Games marathon runner, Grenville Wood) over the last 600m. Wood lead from the outset before some cat and mouse surges mid-race from both Trengove and Wood. Trengove then made a decisive move 600m from the finish, going on to win in 16:35 from Wood in 16:44. It was Trengove’s first outing on the track in more than 18 months.
